We collaborated with the studio SDG Design to create this navy blue kitchen in a centrally-located Parisian townhouse. The aim for this project was to create an aesthetic but functional kitchen that opened out onto the dining room. Given the size of the kitchen, we had to carefully consider each design element to get the most out of the space.
Let us take you through some of the design details in this open-plan navy kitchen.
A navy-blue kitchen: bold colour choices
Choosing the right colours was the first step in this kitchen’s design. We opted to use the Blue Grey finish in Silk Matte for the kitchen cabinets, and Innsbruck White for the tall units and worktops. The large amount of natural light that comes into the room from the terrace means that the dark blue kitchen still feels spacious. The Innsbruck White creates an elegant contrast with the blue and brings a welcome brightness to the space.
This bold pairing of colours creates a vibrant, warm atmosphere and makes the most of the natural light. The navy kitchen cabinets offer visual depth, whilst the Innsbruck White adds a touch of sophistication, creating a unique, contemporary kitchen.
Making the most of the space with considered details
We ensured the kitchen was as functional as it was aesthetically appealing by taking the time to carefully consider each design detail. The decision to round the peninsula worktop, for example, was both an aesthetic and practical one. This shape creates an ergonomic experience for our clients by removing jarring corners and creating room for easy movement through the space.
Another bold decision was to add a retractable unit in Natural Oak. This unit not only provides practical storage but balances out other elements in the space. Oak adds natural warmth to the kitchen, counteracting the very contemporary feel of the dark blue cabinets and the brightness of the Innsbruck White countertops. This retractable unit also optimises the space by adding an extra prep area, crucial in this small 8.9m2 kitchen.
We also installed LED lighting under the tall units to ensure the preparation area was well-lit and easy to use. Wooden undersides of the tall unit tie in with the unit interiors and create a coherent, welcoming space.
The final kitchen is a bright, welcoming space with plenty of storage, different prep zones and a seating area. The marriage of the energetic Grey Blue with the bright Innsbruck White creates a captivating visual dynamic, whilst details such as the rounded counter and the retractable Natural Oak unit demonstrate that practicality was favoured as much as aesthetics in our design.
