This kitchen with bridging units was designed in partnership with architect Amélie Bruzac from Nolita Studio Déco, for a brand-new apartment in the Arsenal eco-district of Rueil-Malmaison, a Parisian suburb. Our mission was to create a kitchen that felt elegant, sophisticated and functional for everyday use. At only 10m2, every detail mattered, and the finished project is a welcoming living space where comfort and design are considered in equal measure.
We chose to use bridging units in this kitchen to maximise storage space without overwhelming the room. Two column units flank two rows of wall units, one of which is shallower than the other, creating the illusion of a bridge. The shallower bridging unit ensures the central countertop remains practical and comfortable to use, with no overhead storage blocking the space.
A kitchen with a mix of materials and textures
The charm of this kitchen lies in the balance of light and dark, with Silk Black unit fronts contrasting the warm Vertical Natural Oak bridging units. The mix of materials softens the black and evokes a feeling of calm.
Clean lines and handleless units in the FINE model from Santos structure the space, whilst the 2-cm thick ceramic Statuario Altissimo Soft Touch countertop from Laminam adds a bright mineral element. Smooth surfaces reflect the natural light and create a feeling of continuity between the different living areas.
The kitchen feels timeless and elegant, with a mix of materials and textures. Whilst the focal point of the space is the Silk Black units, the wooden bridging cabinets add warmth, and the ceramic countertops a bright pop of contrast. Matte finishes for the units reduce markings and feel soft to touch. Each material was chosen for its durability and resistance, and together they create an attractive, welcoming kitchen.
Adding kitchen bridging units for aesthetics and function
The owners wanted a simple, functional kitchen that encouraged socialising and provided as much storage as possible. This meant that every element in the space had to be both aesthetic and practical. An example of this is the handleless base units, which are built on sliding systems to ensure that their contents can be seen and easily accessed.
The kitchen is built around a large central island which serves as both a food prep space and a breakfast bar. The addition of stools makes the island multifunctional and better suited to hosting. Here coffee can be served, or guests can sit and chat to the cook; the kitchen is a social space connected to the living room, rather than an isolated area.
Against the wall, the line of kitchen units encompasses both the cooking and washing zones, with electronic appliances built into the units for a seamless look. The column unit on the left houses the oven and microwave, as well as storage space, whilst the right-hand column unit hides the fridge and freezer. Built discretely into the base units, the wine cooler adds a premium touch with its glass door and wooden interior.
Finally, bridging units in the centre of the space create visual structure and provide extra storage.
A design with considered details
This wood, black and white kitchen feels bright and airy thanks to large French doors that invite the outdoors in. The abundance of natural light balances out the darker tones to create a kitchen that is understated and inviting.
The wooden bridging units bring warmth to the kitchen and add a softer, welcoming feel. Nothing in this kitchen was left to chance - from the curve of the angles to the cadence of ceramic grain, each detail has been carefully selected to contribute to the overall look and feel of the space.
Choice of décor also contributes to the kitchen’s ambiance, and our preference was for high-quality items such as the Nino model stools from Westwing and the Tikmoon Arko table. The Modeco Plus Pendant hanging lights from Nordic Tales bring an ethereal touch above the island with their delicate, organic design, and bathe the room in warm light come evening time.
This kitchen with bridging units illustrates the eba philosophy to create spaces that bring together aesthetics and functionality. Here, the kitchen is elevated from a simple practical space to a room that can be enjoyed and shared with friends and family. Every decision, from the choice of finishes to the size of units, translates our desire to enhance the everyday and create spaces that simply feel good.
